TOPIC: Step into Spring — take a walk!

by kathy schlepp

Now that the days are getting longer, what “steps” will you take to get outdoors?

Walking is one of the easiest ways to take in the sights and sounds of Spring, and it comes with health benefits, too. Just step outside and let your senses soak up the fresh air, budding flowers and chirping birds. You’ll find walking can reduce stress and improve your mood, too.

How do you get in the habit? Here are a few suggestions:

• Walk before or after work.

• Take a walk with friends or coworkers at lunch.

• Enjoy one of the many beautiful city trails. Don’t forget Fido!

Although the Health District On the Move program is no longer enrolling groups, the Program Manual is available to groups wanting to implement the program!

• Leave the car in the garage and walk to work, the store, to school or to a friend’s house.

• Take an after-dinner stroll with the family or start the weekend with a walk on Saturday morning.

Sometimes we all need a little nudge to get us going. One way is to walk with a group. Studies show that we increase the time and frequency of our physical activity when we exercise together.

We can help your group – work site, church or organization – get moving. The 15-week walking program, Health District On the Move, encourages you and your group to take more steps each day. A pedometer will help you count your steps and reach your goal. As you walk, you’ll find support from the group.

Sound easy? It is. So, what are you waiting for? Start today and do something good for yourself!
