TOPIC: About pedometers

Think of your pedometer as a fitness meter.

Wear the pedometer on your waistband or belt if possible. Place it 2-4 inches to the right or left of your belly button. Make sure it is level, worn close to your body and that the cover is closed. If you are wearing a dress, you may choose to attach it to undergarments.

Be sure that your pedometer is working properly. You can do this by walking 100 steps, then checking the pedometer counter. If the number is between 90 and 110, the pedometer is working properly. If your number is outside this range, reposition the pedometer and make sure it is closed properly. Try the test again. If your pedometer still does not register close to 100 steps, you may need to return or exchange it.

A safety clip is available to keep your pedometer from accidentally falling off your clothing. Most sporting goods stores and some discount retailers sell pedometers. They come in a range of prices and styles — from basic counters to deluxe models that can calculate exercise time and calories burned.
