The 12 (Happier) Days of Christmas Tips for Combating Holiday Depression |

by lin wilder Day 1 – Don’t try to make this holiday “the best ever,” or spend too much time preparing for just one day. Day 2 – Try not to compare this year’s holiday season with those in the past, whether they were good or bad. |

Day 4 – Be realistic about what you can and can’t afford. Remember, there is more to holidays than gifts. Day 5 – If you are alone during the holidays, find ways to be with others such as volunteering at a shelter. Day 6 – If you find old patterns repeating themselves, do something different. Send out holiday cards in July, get take-out pizza on Christmas Day. Day 7 – Don’t try to do everything yourself; ask for help. Do a potluck holiday dinner. Day 8 – Avoid unrealistic expectations. Recognize guilt-producing thoughts or messages containing words such as “should” or “must,” and absolutes such as “always” or “never.” Day 9 – Realize that it’s normal to grieve over losses even during the “happy” holidays. Talk about your emotions. Day 10 – Exercise is a
powerful antidote for depression. Make it part of your daily routine –
especially outdoor exercise in bright daylight. Day 12 – Remember that everyone experiences sadness and periodic depression at times. However, if you experience numerous symptoms of depression, your holiday blues last more than two weeks, or your life is being greatly effected by your symptoms, consult a mental health care provider or family doctor. |
